单词 obacerate
释义

obaceratev.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin obacerāt-, obacerāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin obacerāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of obacerāre to contradict (only recorded in an 8th-cent. epitome), probably < ob- ob- prefix + a second element of uncertain origin (see note). The word depends ultimately on a glossarial reference in Paulus Diaconus Epitome Festi, who associates the word with classical Latin acus , acer- chaff, ancient Greek ἄχυρα (plural) chaff, but this probably represents a folk etymology. A derivation from ācer sharp (see acrid adj.) is perhaps more plausible.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To stop the mouth of (a person).
