Etymology: < Japanese Ōbaku (1677 as Woubaku, more fully Ōbaku-shū Obaku sect) < the name of Mount Obaku (Japanese Ōbaku-san), given by the Chinese monk known in Japanese as Ingen (1592–1673) to the mountain near Kyoto where he founded the sect.Ingen named the mountain after Mount Huangbo (Chinese Huángbòshān, lit. ‘Yellow Cork-tree Mountain’) in Fujian, China, where he had been the superior of a temple of the pre-Rinzai school. The Obaku branch of Zen Buddhism is occasionally referred to by Chinese writers as Huangbo or Huang-po. The official name of the monastery on Mount Obaku was Manpukuji, but informally it also was referred to as Obaku by association. Compare:1727 J. G. Scheuchzer tr. E. Kæmpfer Hist.
