Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obstupescentia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin obstupescentia (1529 or earlier: see note) < classical Latin obstupēscent- , obstupēscēns , present participle of obstupēscere (also obstipēscere ) to become stupefied ( < ob- ob- prefix + stupēscere to become dazed or stupefied < stupēre to be or become dazed, stunned (see stupent adj.) + -ēscere -esce suffix) + -ia -ia suffix1; compare -ence suffix.Post-classical Latin obstupescentia is recorded earliest in translations of Greek medical texts, translating ancient Greek ἔκπληξις stupor.
