Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obtectus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin obtectus (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) 340) < classical Latin obtectus , past participle of obtegere to cover over < ob- ob- prefix + tegere to cover (see tect adj.). Compare earlier obtected adj.
Entomology.
Of a pupa: in which the insect's appendages are firmly held against its body by a glue-like secretion and the body is usually covered by hardened cuticle.

1932 Amer. Naturalist 66 457 Hesperiidae. Frenulum lost. Pupa becomes obtect (i.e., nearly soldered together, with at most a little motion at three joints) within the family.
a1933 J. A. Thomson Biol. for Everyman (1934) I. xiii. 322 The pupae..are enclosed in firm protective cases, and the appendages are usually cemented closely to the body. These are called ‘obtect pupae’, in contrast to the ‘free pupae’ of beetles.
1969 R. F. Chapman Insects xxi. 403 The appendages are glued down to the body by a secretion produced at the larve/pupa moult. This is the obtect condition and obtect pupae are usually more heavily sclerotised than are exarate pupae.
1994 P. J. Gullan & P. S. Cranston Insects vi. 158/2 Insects with obtect pupae may lack a cocoon, as in coccinellid beetles and most nematocerous and orthorrhaphous Diptera.
