单词 obtend
释义

obtendv.

Forms: 1600s–1700s obtend; Scottish pre-1700 obtend, pre-1700 obtende.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obtendere.
Etymology: < classical Latin obtendere to spread in front of, to put forward as a reason, excuse, to allege < ob- ob- prefix + tendere tend v.2 N.E.D. (1902) defines obtension as ‘the action of obtending’, but the definition is carried over from Johnson (1755), whose entry is the only evidence for the word, and the use cannot be taken as establishing that the verb was extant in the early 20th cent.
