单词 obtenebrate
释义

obtenebratev.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin obtenebrat-, obtenebrare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin obtenebrat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of obtenebrare to darken (Vetus Latina, Vulgate) < classical Latin ob- ob- prefix + tenebrāre to make dark (see tenebrate adj.). Compare Anglo-Norman obtenebrer to cloud, to obfuscate (13th cent.), Middle French, French †obtenebrer to darken (1452 in Middle French; already in Old French (c1320) in sense ‘to become dark’). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ̆bte·nĭbreit) /əbˈtɛnɪbreɪt/.
Obsolete (rare after 17th cent.).
transitive. To cast a shadow over; to overshadow, shade, or darken.
