单词 oenothera
释义

oenotheran.

Brit. /ˌiːnə(ʊ)ˈθɪərə/, /iːˈnɒθ(ə)rə/, U.S. /ˌinəˈθɪrə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oenothera.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin oenothera (15th cent.), an alternative reading for classical Latin onothēra , also onothēras a plant mentioned by Pliny < Hellenistic Greek ὀνοθήρας , lit. ‘ass-catcher’ < ancient Greek ὄνος ass (see onocentaur n.) + θηρᾶν to hunt, pursue, catch < θήρ wild beast (see thero- comb. form); another name was ὀνάγρα ass-trap. In sense 2 < scientific Latin Oenothera, genus name (Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 346, after earlier use by him in Systema Naturæ (1735)); compare French oenothère (1811).It has been suggested that the plant was so called because it is toxic and so may be used in small quantities to catch asses (or other animals). The Latin form oenothera is probably due to the influence of ancient Greek οἰνο- oeno- comb. form (compare the form Hellenistic Greek οἰνοθήρας , in some manuscripts of Theophrastus), with the name thus interpreted as meaning ‘wine-trap’; compare quot. 1601 at sense 1 and also:1860 W. Baird Dict. Nat. Hist. 389/1 The roots [of Oenothera biennis] are eatable, and were formerly taken after dinner to flavour wine, as olives now are; hence its name Oenothera, or wine-trap.
