Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin oestrum, oestrus.
Etymology: < classical Latin or post-classical Latin oestrum (recorded in an 8th-cent. epitome, which may preserve earlier material), variant of classical Latin oestrus oestrus n. With sense 3 compare post-classical Latin oestrum sexual stimulus (1713), oestrum veneris clitoris (1666).
1. A parasitic or biting insect, esp. a gadfly or botfly. Cf. oestrus n. 1. Obsolete.In quot. 1656 applied to a flea; in 1854 to a parasite infesting fish (a sense of Greek οἶστρος).
