Origin: Probably formed within English, by conversion. Etymons: English oftsīþum , oftsithe n.
Etymology: Probably < Old English oftsīþum, dative plural of oftsithe n., used adverbially. Compare Old Icelandic opt-sinnum many times. Compare slightly earlier oftsithes adv., and later often sithe adv. at often adv. and adj. Compounds 1.The reflex of the Old English dative plural ending -um survives in the early Middle English form ofte siðen. In Middle English written indifferently as one word or as two.
