Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < o, variant of of prep. or on prep. + grant n.1, perhaps after an unattested Anglo-Norman *a grant (compare Old French a creant (13th cent.) in venir a creant to please, be to one's liking, recevoir a creant to agree, assent). Compare also earlier agraunte v. N.E.D. (1902) indicates the stress as oˈgrant.
