Etymology: < old adj. + one pron.With sense 2 compare Old English se ealda , in the same sense:OE Homiletic Fragment I 32 Wacað se ealda dweleð ond drefeð dæges ond nihtes miltse mid mane. In sense 3 apparently after Navajo Öanaasází Anasazi n., but this was based on a misunderstanding of the Navajo word. Compare:1979 F. Plog in Handbk. N. Amer. Indians IX. 108/1 The term Anasazi was introduced in archaeological use by Kidder..who based it on a Navajo word that he took to mean ‘old people’. However, although..given in dictionaries as ‘ancient people’..it is discomfiting to some modern Pueblo people that the English name..comes from a Navajo term that literally means ‘enemy ancestors’.
