Designating or relating to any of various Roman typefaces characterized by oblique stress, bracketed serifs, little contrast between thick and thin strokes, and great variation in character widths. Cf. old style n. 2.Old-face fonts were used esp. by printers of the 15th to 18th centuries. They were based on Venetian types, esp. those cut by Francesco Griffo in 1495 and by Claude Garamond in 1530–40, which were derived from classical inscriptions and handwriting styles of the 15th cent.
