Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin olīvētum.
Etymology: < classical Latin olīvētum olive grove < olīva olive n.1 + -ētum -et suffix1. Compare Middle French olivete (1600; early 13th cent. in Old French in sense ‘small olive tree’; French olivette).In sense 1 Mount (of) Olivet renders post-classical Latin mons oliveti (Vetus Latina, Vulgate), which, in the gospels, itself renders Hellenistic Greek τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαίων the Mount of Olives; this name is first attested in Septuagint (Zechariah 14:4), where it renders Hebrew har hazzēṯīm. The Old and Middle English forms olifeti, oliueti are after the Latin genitive singular.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French olivette.
Etymology: Apparently < French olivette fake pearl (1723) < olive olive n.1 + -ette -ette suffix. French olivette is apparently not attested in sense 1; however, compare olive olive-shaped button (1765).
1. An oval button or piece of wood covered with silk or worsted and used for fastening a garment by means of a loop of braid. Cf. olive n.1 7c.
