olla podridan.

Brit. /ˌɒlə pəˈdriːdə/, U.S. /ˌɑlə pəˈdridə/

Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish olla podrida.
Etymology: < Spanish olla podrida (1539) < olla pot (see olla n.) + podrida , feminine of podrido rotten (1220–50) < classical Latin putridus putrid adj. Compare Middle French, French olla podrida (1590 in sense 1, 1649 in sense 2 as ollopodride ). Compare pot-pourri n.It is not known why olla podrida was so called in Spanish; perhaps from the resemblance of the bubbling and swelling appearance of the slow-cooking stew to festering putrefaction (compare Spanish podrido (colloquial) fed up, podrida (colloquial) brawl, rumpus). With sense 2 compare earlier gallimaufry n. 2, hotchpotch n. 1, hodge-podge n. 2.
1. A highly spiced stew of Spanish and Portuguese origin, made from various kinds of meat and vegetables; = olio n. 1.
