单词 ollamh
释义

ollamhn.

Brit. /ˈɒləv/, U.S. /ˈɑləv/, Irish English /ˈɑləv/
Forms: 1700s– ollamh, 1800s– ollam, 1800s– ollav, 1800s– ollave, 1900s– ollabh (irregular). Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish ollamh.
Etymology: < Irish ollamh learned man, expert, master poet, professor (Early Irish ollam ), use as noun of Early Irish ollam , ollom greatest < oll great (perhaps related to classical Latin pollēre to be strong: see pollent adj.) + -am , superlative suffix ( < the same Indo-European base as the suffix attested in classical Latin prīmus prime adj.).In quot. 1723 referring to Ollamh Fódhla, lit. ‘chief wise man of Ireland’, the name of a legendary king of Ireland (Early Irish Ollam Fotla). The form ollabh results from confusion between two nearly homophonic consonant clusters in Irish: mh and bh; the form ollam represents the Early Irish spelling; and the forms ollav, ollave reflect the pronunciation (the latter chiefly used in the context of symbolic ranks in modern festivals).
Irish History.
A rank of Irish learned man, the most distinguished kind of file (cf. fili n.); a master of a particular field of knowledge, esp. a master poet or chronicler. Revived as a symbolic rank in 20th-century festivals.
