Etymology: < the name of the Oldoway (now Olduvai) Gorge in Tanzania ( < Masai ol-dupai sansevieria, a plant which abounds at the Gorge) + -an suffix.The name is attested as Ol-dowai (1914) during the period of German rule, subsequently as Oldoway , and from the 1930s, Olduvai . It has been suggested that the Leakeys, in the early days of research at the Gorge (compare quot. 1934 at sense A.), adopted the spelling Oldoway, hence contributing to the dominant preference for the form Oldowan over the other forms.
