Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: oil n.1, tree n.
Etymology: < oil n.1 + tree n. Compare Old High German oleboum, oliboum olive tree, oleaster (Middle High German ölboum, etc., German Ölbaum).In Isaiah 41:19 (see quot. 1611) after Hebrew ʿēṣ-šemen, probably oleaster or wild olive (compare 1 Kings 6:23; Nehemiah 8:15 Revised Version).
Now rare.
Any of various trees and large shrubs having fruits or seeds that yield an oil; spec. (a) an oleaster or olive tree (obsolete); (b) the castor oil plant, Ricinus communis; (c) the African oil palm Elaeis guineensis; (d) a tung tree ( Aleurites species).
