Etymology: < oil n.1 + cake n. and adj. Compare German Ölkuchen (late 18th cent. in this sense; earlier in sense ‘cake baked using oil’).
The mass of fibrous vegetable matter left after seeds such as rapeseed, linseed, or cotton-seed have been pressed for their oil, used as fodder for livestock and as manure (formerly also in plural). Also as a count noun: a piece of this substance.
