Etymology: < oil n.1 + fish n.1 (see below).
Any of various fishes noted for their oily flesh, esp. Ruvettus pretiosus (family Gempylidae), a large, long-bodied, purple-brown fish of tropical and warm temperate seas, whose oil has a purgative effect.
