Etymology: < post-classical Latin acanonicus (1615 or earlier; < a- a- prefix¹ + canon canon n.¹ + -icus -ic suffix, probably after Byzantine Greek ἀκανόνιστος) + -al suffix¹. R. Goclenius Lexicon philosophicum Græcum (1615) 285 gives a Greek form ἀκανόνικος, but this is not attested in Greek authors.
