Etymology: < Okanagan uknaqín, incorporating the suffix -qín head. Compare:1930 J. A. Teit & F. Boas in 45th Ann. Rep. Bureau Amer. Ethnol. 198 'Okanā'qēn' is said to be derived from the name of a place on the Okanagon River, somewhere near the Falls, so named because it was the ‘head’ of the river... Some Okanagan and Sanpoil informants stated that the name is that of a place at or near Okanagan Falls, where there was at one time an important salmon fishery, the place of their origin.
