Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: oleandrose , -o- connective, -mycin suffix.
Etymology: < oleand- (in oleandrose, a sugar of which a residue is present in the oleandomycin molecule < oleandr- (in oleandrin n.) + -ose suffix2) + -o- connective + -mycin suffix.
Pharmacology.
A macrolide antibiotic, C35H61NO12, produced by a strain of the bacterium Streptomyces antibioticus, which is active against a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria and has been used as the phosphate in treating staphylococcal enteritis and skin infections.
