Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Olearia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Olearia (C. Moench Suppl. Methodus Plantas Horti Botanici et Agri Marburgensis (1802) 254) < the name of Johann Gottfried Olearius (Latinized form of the German surname Ölschläger ; 1635–1711), German theologian and horticulturist + -a -a suffix1 1.
A genus of the family Asteraceae ( Compositae) consisting of evergreen shrubs and trees bearing clusters of daisy-like white, mauve, etc., flowers, native to Australasia and often grown in coastal districts elsewhere; (also olearia) a tree or shrub of this genus (also called daisy bush, daisy tree).
