Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French olfaction ; olfact v., -ion suffix1.
Etymology: Either < French olfaction sense of smell (1825; 1530 in Middle French as olefaction ; 1507 in sense ‘odour’) < classical Latin olfact- , past participial stem of olfacere to smell (see olfacient n.) + French -ion -ion suffix1, or < olfact v. + -ion suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin olfactio sense of smell (12th cent. in a British source; probably earlier in an undated glossary).
