Origin: Probably (i) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Russian. Or perhaps (iii) from a proper name. Etymons: Olonetsian n.; Russian oloneckij; proper name Olonec.
Etymology: Probably shortened < Olonetsian n., but perhaps either < olonec- (in Russian oloneckij of Olonets, probably in a phrase such as oloneckoe narečie Olonets dialect, 1898 or earlier), or directly < Olonec (also transliterated Olonets ), the name of a town (also known as Aunus ) and former province in north-western Russia, now part of the Republic of Karelia within the Russian Federation. Compare Finnish aunus . Compare earlier Olonetsian n. and the following:1850 ‘Talvi’ Hist. View Lang. & Lit. Slavic Nations ii. i. 50 Vulgar and corrupted branches of this dialect, are those of Suzdal and Olonetzk [sic], the last of which is mixed with Finnish words.1873 Jrnl. Anthropol. Inst. 2 213 In regard to the Esth, there can be small hesitation. It is hardly distinguishable from the dialect of Olonetz, which is typically Yam.The people's own name for their language is livvi and their self-designation is livviki.
A Finno-Ugric language (one of the principal varieties of Karelian), mainly spoken in the area between Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega.Also called Aunus, Livvi or Olonetsian (see Olonetsian n.).
