Etymology: < Oman (Arabic ʿumān: see note), the name of a country at the south-eastern corner of the Arabian peninsula. Compare Omani n. and adj.An independent sultanate, known as Muscat and Oman until 1970, Oman was the most influential power in the region in the 19th cent., controlling Zanzibar and other territory. Since the late 19th cent. Oman has had strong links with Britain. The origin of the place name is uncertain: it perhaps derives < the same base as Arabic amān shelter, safety, security, amīn settled, safe, secure (compare amin n.), or alternatively could be < a personal or tribal name. A city named Omana is mentioned in a first-cent. Latin source and its equivalent in Hellenistic Greek is found in Ptolemy (second cent.). The name Oman first occurs in an English context in the early 18th cent.
