Origin: A borrowing from Akan. Etymon: Akan ɔmãŋhéne.
Etymology: < Akan ɔmãŋhéne chief, king < ɔmãŋ community + -héne chief. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (ōu·manhene) /ˈəʊmænheɪneɪ/.
Among the Akan peoples of West Africa: a paramount chief of a state or district, under whom are lesser chiefs of villages.
