单词 omarian
释义

Omariann.adj.

Brit. /əʊˈmɑːrɪən/, U.S. /oʊˈmɑriən/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Omar , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Omar Khayyam, Persian epigrammatist and mathematician (fl. c1100; Persian Abu 'l-Ḥafṣ ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ḵayyām(ī) ) + -ian suffix. With use as adjective compare slightly earlier Omaresque adj. and slightly later Omarite adj.Edward Fitzgerald's 1859 translation, the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (compare rubai n.), first made the name of Omar Khayyam widely known in the English-speaking world. Initially neglected, Fitzgerald's translation achieved the height of its popularity at the end of the 19th cent. Debate over which, if any, of the poems attributed to Khayyam in Persian manuscripts are really by him continues, however.
A. n.
A student or admirer of Omar Khayyam; spec. a member of the Omar Khayyam Club. Now rare. The Omar Khayyam Club was founded in 1892 to enable admirers of Fitzgerald's Rubáiyát to dine together.
