Etymology: < German Acanthin ( E. Haeckel Die Radiolarien (1862) I. 32) < ancient Greek ἄκανθα thorn (see acanthus n.) + German -in -in suffix1. Compare French acanthine (1863 or earlier; < German).
Biochemistry. disused.
A substance forming the skeletal elements of certain radiolarians whose skeletons are not siliceous, eventually identified as strontium chloride.Acanthin was originally thought to be a horny substance resembling chitin.
