Etymology: < ombro- comb. form + -philous comb. form, in sense 1 after German ombrophil (J. Wiesner 1893, in Sitzungsber. der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissensch. Wien: Math.-Nat. Klasse Abth. I. 102 509); compare ombrophobous adj. With sense 2 compare earlier ombrogenous adj.
1. Botany. Of a plant: able to withstand prolonged rainfall. Also: (of leaves) easily wetted (rare).
