Etymology: Probably partly < Middle French, French officialité jurisdiction or court of an ecclesiastical judge (late 13th cent. in Old French as officialiteit ), office of an official (1690) < official official n.1 + -ité -ity suffix, partly < post-classical Latin officialitas willingness to serve, dutifulness (4th cent.), office, jurisdiction, or dignity of an ecclesiastical judge (frequently from 1200 in British sources) < classical Latin officiālis official n.1 + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix), and partly (especially in sense 2) < either official n.1 or official adj. + -ity suffix. With sense 2a compare officialism n.
