Etymology: Probably < Hellenistic Greek ὀλιγάρχης (Dionysius of Halicarnassus) < ancient Greek ὀλιγο- oligo- comb. form + -αρχης -arch comb. form1. Compare post-classical Latin oligarcha (a1551); compare also Middle French, French oligarque (1568; c1562 as olygarche , 1800 as olygarque ). Compare earlier oligarchy n.With sense 2, compare Russian oligarx (1995 or earlier in this sense).
