Origin: A borrowing from Spanish, combined with another borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish olingo, Spanish -ito.

Etymology: < Central American Spanish olingo olingo n. + -ito -et suffix¹.The name was coined by researchers to denote an animal first identified from museum specimens in the U.S.A.

A nocturnal arboreal mammal, Bassaricyon neblina (family Procyonidae), which is the smallest of the olingos, native to the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador.
