Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French on dit.
Etymology: < French on dit, literally ‘they say, it is said’ (dated to end of the 12th cent. in Robert Dict. Alphabétique et Analogique (1986) in sense A., 1738 in sense B.) < on one, they (see one pron. 17a) + dit , 3rd person singular of the present tense of dire to say (see disour n.).Not fully naturalized in English.
