Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin optīvus.
Etymology: < classical Latin optīvus chosen < the stem of optāre optate v. + -īvus -ive suffix. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·ptiv) /ˈɒptɪv/.
Obsolete. rare.
Characterized or constituted by choosing; elective. tutor optive n. [after classical Latin tūtor optīvus] a tutor (tutor n. 2b) chosen by the person to be protected.
