Etymology: < post-classical Latin opus Dei, lit. ‘work of God’ (attested from the 5th cent. denoting Divine Office or worship; c1185 in a British source) < classical Latin opus work (see opus n.) + Deī , genitive of Deus God (see deus int.). In sense 2 probably via Spanish Opus Dei (the organization was founded in Spain in 1928 as Societas Sacerdotalis Sanctae Crucis et Opus Dei).
