Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin opus, sectile.
Etymology: < classical Latin opus work (see opus n.) + sectile, neuter of sectilis produced by cutting, used by Vitruvius of Roman floors (see sectile adj.).The phrase opus sectile does not appear to be recorded in classical Latin or post-classical Latin.
Archaeology.
A form of Roman floor decoration similar to mosaic but composed of pieces shaped individually to fit the design, rather than regularly shaped tesserae.
