Etymology: < scientific Latin Oniscus (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 636) < Hellenistic Greek ὀνίσκος woodlouse < ὄνος ass, woodlouse (see onocentaur n.) + -ίσκος, diminutive suffix. Compare classical Latin oniscus, oniscos millipede.

Zoology.

A genus of terrestrial isopod crustaceans of the suborder Oniscoidea; (also oniscus) †a crustacean of this genus, a woodlouse (obsolete).
