Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -ētum.
Etymology: < classical Latin -ētum (in e.g. myrtētum myrtetum n., pīnētum pinetum n.), neuter of -ētus , -tus (see -ed suffix2).Earliest in the borrowing myrtetum n. in the 17th cent. Occasional formations within English are found from at least the 19th cent.; compare e.g. salicetum n. (and spelling history at that entry), filicetum n. at filix n. Derivatives.
(a) Forming nouns denoting a collection or plantation of plants of a type denoted by the first element (esp. plants of a single genus); cf. arboretum n., myrtetum n., pinetum n., salicetum n.; (b) Ecology forming nouns denoting vegetation, esp. a plant association (association n. 12), dominated by plants of a type denoted by the first element.
