Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: opistho- comb. form, Greek σῶμα.
Etymology: < opistho- comb. form + ancient Greek σῶμα body (see soma n.2). Compare earlier opisthosomal adj.
Zoology.
The posterior section of the body in various invertebrates that have a body divided into two or three distinct sections; esp. (a) the abdomen of a chelicerate arthropod, as an arachnid; (b) the segmented posterior end of the body of a pogonophoran worm, bearing many setae. Cf. prosoma n., metasoma n.
