Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French opilatif; Latin oppilativus.
Etymology: < Middle French opilatif (1380 in a medical context in sense ‘causing obstruction’; 1426 in sense ‘constipating’; French opilatif , †oppilatif ) or its etymon post-classical Latin oppilativus obstructive (from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin oppilāt- , past participial stem of oppilāre oppilate v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Italian oppilativo (first half of the 14th cent.). N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·pilĕitiv) /ˈɒpɪleɪtɪv/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
Tending to block or obstruct; spec. (of a medicine) closing the pores or restraining the passage of matter to the surface; (also) constipating.
