Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀψομανία.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek ὀψομανία an excessive craving for a particular food, especially a delicacy < ancient Greek ὄψον rich fare, delicacies (see opsony n.) + Hellenistic Greek -μανία -mania comb. form (compare ancient Greek ὀψομανής mad after delicacies). Compare earlier opsomaniac n. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫpsomēi·niă) /ɒpsəʊˈmeɪnɪə/.
rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
An excessive craving for a particular food, esp. a delicacy.
