Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin optāt-, optāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin optāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of optāre to choose, wish, desire, frequentative of an unattested verb < the same base as Umbrian opeter chosen, Oscan ufteis desire, choice. Compare earlier optation n., and later opt v.
rare before late 19th cent. Now literary.
intransitive. To choose, to opt.In quot. 1985 humorously pedantic.
