Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: optic adj., nerve n.
Etymology: < optic adj. + nerve n., after French nerf optique (1314 in Old French as †nerfs obtiques, plural) or post-classical Latin nervi optici (plural; c1115 in Adelard of Bath, also a1300 in Roger Bacon), in turn after Hellenistic Greek ὀπτικὰ νεῦρα (plural, in Galen). Compare Spanish nervio óptico (1493 or earlier), Italian nervo ottico (1574 as †nervi optici, plural).
Anatomy and Zoology.
The second cranial nerve in vertebrates, which conveys sensory impulses from the eye to the brain. Also: an analogous nerve in an invertebrate.
