Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin onychia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin onychia (1814 or earlier; apparently coined by J. Wardrop: compare quot. 1814) < ancient Greek ὄνυχ- , ὄνυξ nail (see onyx n.) + classical Latin -ia -ia suffix1, after post-classical Latin paronychia. Compare Italian onichia (1834), French onychie (1858).In quot. 1826, translating French onyxis.
Medicine. Now rare.
Originally: †a whitlow affecting a fingernail or toenail; = paronychia n. 1 (obsolete). Later: disease, esp. inflammation or infection, of the nail matrix, resulting in deformity or loss of the nail plate.
