Etymology: < post-classical Latin onychites (also lapis onychites ) onyx stone (6th cent., in translations of Greek authors) < Hellenistic Greek ὀνυχίτης (masculine, in ὀνυχίτης λίθος ) onyx stone (Dioscorides; compare ὀνυχῖτις , feminine, in ὀνυχῖτις λίθος , Appian) < ὄνυξ onyx n. + -ίτης -ite suffix¹. Compare classical Latin onychītis a variety of zinc oxide (Pliny).
