单词 oo-
释义

oo-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: 1800s– oo-, 1800s– oö-. Before a vowel o-.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ᾠο-, ᾠόν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ᾠο-, combining form of ᾠόν egg, ovum < the same Indo-European base as egg n. Compare post-classical and scientific Latin oo- (formations in which are found from at least the late 17th cent.), French oo- (formations in which are found from the mid 18th cent. denoting ovoid shapes, and from the mid 19th cent. in biological sense).Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin. Attested earliest in the first half of the 18th cent. in the Greek loan ooscopy n. English formations are found from the early 19th cent., the earliest having reference to egg-shaped objects (as e.g. oolite n.); a biological sense emerges in the mid 19th cent. and soon becomes more prominent. Most English formations date from the late 19th cent.
