1. Mycology and Botany. Originally: †a supposed reproductive cell in certain fungi (obsolete). Later: an oogonium or carpogonium in certain alga and fungi (now rare).

1882 Ogilvie's Imperial Dict. (new ed.) Oocyst, a chamber appended to the cells of certain of the Polyzoa, which serves as a receptacle for the eggs. Also called Ovicell.
3. Biology. In parasitic protozoa: a resistant structure that forms from a zygote and develops by meiosis into infective sporozoites.
