An egg mother cell, which gives rise to a mature ovum by meiosis. Also: a polar body produced at each meiotic division. Also called ovocyte.The primary oocyte gives rise in the first meiotic division to the secondary oocyte and a polar body; the secondary oocyte in the second meiotic division gives rise to a mature ovum and another polar body.
