Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Oogonium.
Etymology: < German Oogonium (N. Pringsheim 1858, in Jahrbücher f. wissenschaftliche Bot. 1 9; 1895 or earlier in sense 2) < oo- oo- comb. form + ancient Greek γόνος (see gono- comb. form) + scientific Latin -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare Hellenistic Greek ὠογονία laying of eggs.
1. Mycology and Botany. The female gametangium of certain algae, fungi, etc., usually a rounded cell or sac containing one or more oospheres.Usually distinguished from the flask-shaped archegonium of the mosses and ferns, but sometimes including this.
